Eptisa has been awarded the contract to determine the load of every stay cable with a flexible sheath that supports the rooftop of the coal park of the As Pontes Thermal Power Plant in A Coruña.

The calculation of the tension (axial force in the stay cable) is carried out from the frequency records generated in each wire vibration trial, that are obtained from the signal analysis of the installed sensors using Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and the application of the Theory of the Vibrating Wire, ignoring the own bending stiffness of cables. This test is particularly suitable for the operating phase of cable-stayed structures, because it avoids the execution of intrusive and /or destructive trials for the determination of the stress load, with the consequent maintenance cost reduction.

Eptisa, as an expert in structures dynamic test, designs and manufactures portable high precision measurement equipments. Our wide experience performing this type of trials in several structures, for example: the cable-stayed bridge of V Memorial Centenary in Seville, has been decisive for the award.

After performing the trials, engineers of Eptisa will analyze the measurements obtained, and carry out a technical report that includes the residual charges in each cable-stayed and the calculation of the losses respect the original theoretical state. In addition to the listed conclusions, the report shall include the most proper recommendations for each case.
