Eptisa participates in the development of a national water information system in Jordan

The contract includes the assessment and preliminary design, development of a new WIS with a functional design, and upgrade of existing information systems

Jordan is one of the most water scarce countries in the world with a renewable exploitable fresh water availability of around 130 m3 per capita per year without counting desalination and reuse of wastewater, according to data from 2012. In spite of its scarcity, an efficient distribution and management of water is essential for the development of the country especially in sectors that encompass significant socio-economic aspects, such as agriculture, industry and tourism. For that reason, the Ministry of Water & Irrigation has commissioned Eptisa to carry out the development of a national water information system, funded by the European Union.

The contract includes the assessment and preliminary design, the development of a new water information system with a functional design, as well as the upgrade of existing information systems. The objective is to enable water data sharing between all the relevant institutions in a flexible, efficient and non-bureaucratic manner. The project will have an initial duration of approximately 5 years and it is divided into several phases.

The first phase of the project aims to deliver a new fully functional Water Information System (WIS) that can be consulted by all stakeholders using a username and password. The data contained in the old WIS will be migrated to the new one and data feed from other existing systems within the Ministry of Water & Irrigation will be established. Besides, to ensure the efficiency of the new WIS, the information system of other concerned entities will be assessed and support will be given to improve capacity.

Finally, Eptisa will provide the general specifications and a data model for the new national WIS, including mainly GIS data and knowledge information, and will also draft a set of procedures for data management for the Ministry of Water & Irrigation.
