Kickoff of the study of corridors for possible routes for the new high-capacity rail crossing in the Pyrenees

Eptisa will carry out the technical analysis of the corridors

In Spain, are being studied possible alternatives for crossing the Central Pyrenean Massif since the late 19th century. Some of these crossings are already built and/or abandoned due to the low traffic. The Governments of Spain and France, through the Spanish Ministry of Public Works and the French Railway Infrastructure Manager RFF, formed the European Economic Interest Group “High-capacity rail crossing in the Pyrenees”(AEIE - TGC Pirineos in Spanish) to design a new Trans-Pyrenean high-capacity railway axis.

The AEIE - TGC Pirineos has recently awarded Eptisa, in consortium with Rail Concept Creative Solutions and Antea Group, a new contract to carry out the Study of corridors for possible routes for the new high-capacity rail crossing in the Pyrenees, aimed to create a new Trans-Pyrenean railway axis in the central area.

In order to achieve this, the work has been divided into 3 phases:

  • Phase 1 – Regional and local analysis: which includes the collection and analysis of studies, preliminary analysis and synthesis of corridors’ perspectives (local level)
  • Phase 2 – Global integration: with the global analysis of the operational scenarios (origin destination), technical analysis of the corridors, types of services by origin destination and estimated travel time, and synthesis of corridors’ perspectives (European level)
  • Phase 3 – Proposition: Including a comparative economical assessment, multicriteria technical and economical analysis and corridors proposal.

Eptisa will carry out the technical study of the corridors that will consist of the technical definition of the parameters, detailed routes, tunnels, geology and structures, urban planning factors and cost estimates of each alternative.
