March 05 2013

During the meeting held on 13th February 2012, the Arkitera Architecture Center of Turkey evaluated 98 buildings completed in 2012 and located in 11 different cities. The evaluation resulted in the selection of 41 projects to be part of ARKIV Selections 2012.

One of the buildings selected, the Kağıthane Chamber of Commerce Primary School, was part of Eptisa’s project for the “Consultancy Services for Design and Reconstruction Supervision of Etiler Police Vocational Academy Dormitory and 40 Schools in Istanbul”.

Kağıthane Chamber of Commerce Primary School is one of the 40 schools to be demolished and re-constructed within the scope of the "Istanbul Seismic Risk Mitigation and Emergency Preparedness Project (ISMEP)” aiming to prepare Istanbul for any potential earthquake. The architectural projects were designed by Uygur Architecture Office and technical assistance and supervision services were provided by Eptisa.

Arkitera Architecture Center has been organizing the ARKIV Selections for 6 years in order to document the architectural production and create the most comprehensive architectural reference guide and archive of Turkey published under the sponsorship of Kalebodur. The cultural, social, economical, environmental and aesthetical criteria as well as the personal approaches of the selection committee were reflected in the results of the assessments and got the majority of the votes.

The selection committee has examined the spatial quality of the projects taking into consideration the search for innovative approaches and internal consistency. The buildings which did not have the specified spatial characteristics and those which presented a problematic with the ground surface on which they were built were discarded. Each project was evaluated separately in terms of functional aspects of the building, harmony with the surrounding environment, the materials and operation processes. Interior design and restoration projects were not excluded from the selection if they showed a strong spatial scenario and used an innovative approach.

The projects selected will be exhibited for the first time this year at ArkiPARC 2013 Real Estate Meeting, taking place on the 10th & 11th of April 2013. For detailed information on the projects selected, please visit the following WebPages (in Turkish):
